Overview

Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC®) is seeking to hire a full-time technical position to support wildlife, watershed and forestry work across its 211,000 acres of coastal redwood forests. This is a non-exempt position and offers an hourly rate of $28.65 and is located in Scotia, CA.  Successful candidates will survey for Northern Spotted Owl and other sensitive wildlife species and conduct forestry field work and other forest management activities across HRC timberlands located in Humboldt County, California.  HRC is part of the Mendocino Forest Products family of companies (Mendocino Redwood Co., Humboldt Redwood Co., All Weather Wood, and Humboldt Sawmill Co.) who collectively own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Duties and Responsibilities

This is a wildlife/forestry ‘hybrid’ field position with primary duties and responsibilities consisting of conducting Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) night and daytime surveys from February through August reporting and Timber Harvest Plan (THP) development activities such as timber marking and THP layout from September through January.  Other assigned work may include additional wildlife surveys, watershed monitoring, and conducting forest road inventories.   The position reports to Forest Science (Manager, Forest Science) approximately 7 months out of the year and Forestry (Forest Area Managers) for the other approximate 5 months. 

 

Typical duties and responsibilities include:     

  • Conducts Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) and other sensitive species surveys and monitoring;
  • Working alone or in small groups safely in remote areas at night, i.e. conducting night surveys by truck, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), and foot;
  • Care of live mice and feeding of live mice to NSOs;
  • Database entry of survey results;
  • Timber Marking in advance of timber harvest
  • THP layout including mapping and flagging under supervision of a Registered Professional Forester (RPF)
  • Conducts forest road inventory surveys for storm damage and other maintenance needs
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles, trucks and large 4-wheel drive vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
  • With appropriate training, an individual must be capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive in various types of terrain) all -terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
  • Bachelor's or Associates degree (B.S., B.A., A.S., A.A.) or 6 months or more experience performing similar type forestry and wildlife work. 

 

Physical Requirements

  •  The employee must be able to safely navigate steep and difficult terrain, including strenuous hiking.
  • The employee must have ability to use a directional compass, topographical maps, and/or GPS.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep and difficult terrain.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to effectively communicate with others.
  • The employee is required to sit, stand, and walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Climbing and/or crawling through steep and brushy terrain may be required.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; ability to identify northern California birds and trees.
  • As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
  • Position will require night work and irregular schedule.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • This position requires the following personal protective equipment: above ankle boots, eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, hard hat, and ATV helmet.
  • Knowledge of GPS, working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook, or similar software programs a plus

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Position has travel requirements of a local nature (within 100 miles one way), usually by pickup truck.
