Overview

Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) is looking for Foresters to fill full-time Forestry positions in our Fort Bragg, CA location. These positions are exempt with an annual salary of $72,000 for Forester 1 or $84,000 for a Senior Forester, depending on experience level.  In aggregate, the Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

 

Responsibilities

Working under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) for the purpose of commercial forest management with a high standard of environmental stewardship. Primary duties include contract administration, Timber Harvest Plan (THP) preparation, timber marking, road inspections, and prescribed fire carried out under a wide range of weather and field conditions.

  • Logging and road contract administration
  • Conduct road inventories and administer maintenance activities
  • THP preparation involving field reconnaissance, mapping, and operational flagging as instructed by RPF
  • THP Watercourse classification pursuant the California Forest Practice Rules (CFPRs)
  • THP Identification and mapping of unstable areas
  • Conduct timber marking and timber cruising
  • Implement prescribed burning projects
  • Communicate effectively with RPF and Forest Manager

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in forestry or related field preferred but not required
    • 2-3 years related forestry or related field experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred but not required
    • The employee must have the ability to use a directional compass, GPS unit, and topographical maps to navigate terrain and conduct fieldwork accurately.
    • Must maintain and carry a valid driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles and trucks in accordance with company policy guidelines.
    • Capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive in various types of territory) all-terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines, training is provided.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and rugged or steep terrain.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may be loud when operating chainsaws, vehicles, or other mechanical equipment.

  • This position requires regular travel within a local area (typically within 100 miles) by truck or other field vehicles.

  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required while in the field, including eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, leather or rubber gloves, sleeve protection, and a hard hat.
