Overview

Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) is looking for experienced Breakdown Hoist Operator to join our Scotia, CA Planer team.  This is a non exempt position at an hourly rate of $24.65 and includes full benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K matching and life insurance.  

 

In aggregate, The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

 

The Breakdown Hoist Operator breaks down units of lumber for grade to sort for Planer in a safe and productive manner.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Breaks down units of lumber for grade to sort for Planer in a safe and productive manner.
  • Checks for rocks or other items that could damage planer knives and removes them as necessary.
  • Checks for bad incoming lumber and removes as necessary.
  • Keeps lumber straight going into feeder.
  • Keeps infeed chain straight and clean.
  • Pulls stickers when necessary.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Two to five years related sawmill / planer experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Read, interpret, and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals as well as instructions and memos
  • Basic Algebra and Geometry
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral, or diagram form

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to climb or balance.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; risk of electrical shock; explosives; and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather or rubber gloves, chemical goggles, sleeve protection, dust mask, chaps, and hard hat.
