Overview

Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC. (HRC) is seeking an experienced Botanist to join our Forestry team located in Scotia, CA! 

 

This is an exempt position,  the base salary for this position is $74,000.00 to $85,000.00.  Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience.  Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. In aggregate, The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

 

Under the supervision of the Manager, Forest Sciences, this position is responsible for conducting rare plant surveys, mitigation monitoring, preparing survey reports, consulting with Federal and State agencies, and preparing annual rare plant reports in support of timber harvest and timberland management projects for the Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC, which operates on approximately 211,000 acres of privately owned and managed forest lands in Humboldt County, CA. This position is responsible for knowing rare plant survey protocols, departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and proper safety procedures associated with assigned tasks, and is capable of training Botany Technicians in the proper survey techniques.

  • Coordinate, schedule, and conduct all rare plant surveys, mitigation monitoring, and habitat analyses required by the Forest Sciences and Forestry departments
  • Prepare data summaries, and related tables, figures and graphs
  • Complete survey reports documenting data results and, where appropriate, management mitigation recommendations
  • Effectively present the results of rare plant surveys in both private and public forums
  • Capable of training technicians on navigating company property, SOPs, and safety procedures
  • Prepare annual work plans and budget forecasts
  • Work alone or with small groups in remote areas
  • Safely navigate steep and difficult terrain and work in inclement weather

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Botany, Biology, Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field; and a minimum of 6 months related experience and/or training in rare plant surveys.
  • Knowledge of California Department of Fish and Wildlife rare plant survey protocols.
  • Knowledge of the California Environmental Quality Act.
  • Ability to use compass, topographical maps, and GPS. Experience with GIS preferred.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook, database applications, or similar software programs.
  • Must maintain and carry a valid driver license and maintain compliance wiht our Company Driving Policy to remain eligible to operate company vehicles including automobiles, trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and large 4-wheel drive vehicles.
  • With appropriate training, an individual must be capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive in various types of territory) all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in accordance with company policy guidelines. 

Physical Requirements

  • The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This position requires the following personal protective equipment: above ankle boots, eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, hard hat, and ATV helmet.
  • Position has travel requirements of a local nature (within 150 miles one way) usually by pickup truck.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including walking in steep and difficult terrain.
  • As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive, ATVs, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
  • Position may require an irregular schedule
