Overview

Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) has an immediate opening for an experienced Planer Supervisor to join our Scotia, CA sawmill Planer team.

 

This is an exempt position, the base salary for this position is $80,000.00 to $95,000.00.  Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience.  Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.

 

The successful candidate will direct and coordinate activities of workers engaged in Planing operations.

 

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

 

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the Planer employees in accordance with Company policies and applicable laws
  • Coach employees for attainment of Company and individual goals and objectives in accordance with Company guidelines and performance management system
  • Schedule and supervise operations for the Planer Mill
  • Communicate with Shipping Department daily to keep informed of available lumber
  • Communicate with Distribution Center to determine the ability to provide additional products
  • Maintain records for production and shipments
  • Meet the scheduled lumber flow and oversee quick and correct reaction to unplanned downtime
  • Ensure regulatory compliance for the departments including operating within environmental permits, OSHA guidelines, insurance requirements and company policy
  • Coordinate with the Accounting Department to analyze and model financial and production data
  • Forecast and control budgetary expenditures
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of lumber within the departments
  • Interpret company policies to workers, enforces safety regulations, and provides safe job operating procedure training
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew
  • Analyze and resolve work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals
  • Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments
  • Possess the ability to multi-task while dealing with multiple, competing priorities

Qualifications

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred
  • Five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic knowledge and undersdtanding of Redwood and Douglas Fir Lumber grades.
  • Basic knowledge and undersdtanding in Westren Wood Products Association (WWPA) and Redwood Inspection Service (RSI) grading rules.
  • Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating a company vehicle including automobiles and trucks in accordance with company policy guidelines
  • Proficient skill level in Outlook, Power Point and MS Excel, Word, Project, Access, and Office

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, couch or crawl
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • May spend up to 75% of time reviewing operations inside the mill
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will split his/her time between a typical mill office environment and the mill floor
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles while on the mill floor.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals
  • The noise level in the office environment is usually moderate while the noise level in the mill dictates the necessity for hearing protection when working on the mill floor
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus and communicate
  • This position frequently requires eye protection, hearing protection, leather or rubber gloves, safety vest, safety shoes, hard hat and fall protection as required
