Overview

Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) is seeking a Forest Inventory Cruiser to join their team based in either Ukiah or Fort Bragg, CA!

 

This is an exempt position, the base salary for this position is $72,000.00 and includes full benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K Match and Life Insurance.

 

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Responsibilities

This position works predominantly outdoors in various terrain and climatic conditions under the direction and supervision of a forest inventory manager. 

  • Performs timber inventory data collection (i.e., timber cruising) pursuant established forest inventory protocol in a variety of forest stand conditions.
  • Conducts check cruises of selected inventory plots completed by other timber cruisers and contractors for quality control assurance.  
  • Reports data to forest inventory manager in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Collects data for permanent growth plots.
  • Collects data for carbon offset projects pursuant carbon data collection protocol.
  • Aids forestry staff in pre-harvest cruising and other forestry related projects.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year timber cruising, forestry, or other related outdoor work experience; and/or bachelor’s degree in forestry or related field.
  • Knowledge of common tree and plant species typical to northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Ability to work alone productively in rugged outdoor terrain settings.
  • Can travel away from home overnight occasionally, for up to one week at a time.
  • Experience with ESRI ARC GIS technology and MBG Mobile Map software preferred but not required.
  • Must carry or be able to obtain a valid California Driver’s License and be eligible to operate a company vehicle under company policy guidelines

  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and communicate.
  • The employee is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep difficult terrain. 
  • As the employee is required to use four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • This position may require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather/rubber gloves, sleeve protection and a hard hat.
