Humboldt Sawmill Company (HSC) is looking for a talented Tallier / Bander to join our Planer team at our Scotia, CA Sawmill. 

 

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Responsibilities

Tallies lumber units accurately by piece count, specie, grade and size in a safe productive manner.

  • Tallies lumber units accurately by piece count, specie, grade and size.
  • Prepares accurate and legible tally tags to be placed on the lumber units or operates computer to enter data and print tags as required.
  • Bands lumber for shipment according to Company specifications.
  • Helps place spacers on lumber units.
  • May drive forklift to replenish sticking and banding supplies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Two to five years related sawmill / planer experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and memos. Ability to write simple sentences.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Physical Requirements: 

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, climb or balance; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to smell.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, vibration, and moving mechanical parts. 
  • The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; and risk of electrical shock. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • This position requires eye protection, hearing protection, leather or rubber gloves, safety shoes, and hard hat.
  • The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. .
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • This job may require the following equipment when in the plant: eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, safety shoes and a hard hat.
