The Humboldt Sawmill Company (HSC) is looking for Quality Assurance Technicians to join our Qualitity Assurance Department at our Scotia, CA Sawmill. 

 

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Responsibilities

The Primary focus of this position is to Maintain computer optimization system parameters for Mill Operations. Assure high standards of product quality while adhering to Company safety expectations.

  • Set up optimizing software on all machine centers for various run types
  • Check lumber sizes and calibrate machines to ensure lumber products are maintaining size and grade standards
  • Maintain quality assurance processes
  • Provide grade studies when requested or required
  • Monitor efficiency and cost-effectiveness of product output
  • Review final product to ensure quality specifications are met
  • Work with machine operators and other team members
  • Work with crew to improve grade knowledge and averages
  • Share knowledge of redwood and white woods lumber grades
  • Work in a safe productive manner in all capacities and helps maintain a safe and clean work environment

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 10 years mill experience
  • Must have grading experience, knowledge of redwood and white woods lumber grades and good communication and people skills
  • Ability to operate and read a caliper and tape measure is required
  • Must have strong computer skills in Microsoft applications including Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Experience with Optimization Software is required
  • Basic Algebra and Geometry

 

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, hard hat, leather or rubber gloves, sleeve protection, leather aprons and face shields.
