Overview

Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) is looking for an experienced Director of Mill Operations to lead our our flagship Sawmill and Power Plant in Scotia, CA! The Director, Mill Operations will provide leadership for all operational areas of sawmill business unit, including the Log Yard, Sawmill, Planer, Power Plant, Quality department, and Shipping department; by performing the following duties personally or through partnership with Senior Vice President, Operations, and business unit supervisors. 

 

Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) located in Scotia, CA  was formed in July 2008 through the reorganization of the former Pacific Lumber Company and related entities. Humboldt Redwood consists of forestry as well as lumber manufacturing and distribution operations. Humboldt Redwoods forestry operations include approximately 327 square miles (209,300 acres) of coast redwood and Douglas-fir forestlands. Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the business unit.
  • Meet or exceed stated Mission.
  • Establish and communicate operational objectives for the business.
  • Provide leadership in the development and maintenance of a clear business plan with objective metrics.
  • Coach the management team towards achievement of the business objectives.
  • Provide sound management practices, supportive of company Purpose and Principles.
  • Provide excellent support for affiliated business units and corporate services.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous process improvement and implements changes.
  • Develop a business culture responsive to internal and external customer’s needs.
  • Develop and monitor operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Measure business performance against budgeted/forecasted standards and reports business performance.
  • Oversight of site-specific maintenance and reliability programs and initiatives.
  • Work with sales division to develop markets for higher yielding products.
  • Identify key measurables of the business and establish a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership through example for all business unit managers/supervisors.
  • Establish competent management team capable of growing the business and meeting ownership expectations.
  • In partnership with Human Resources, support training to managers/supervisors pertaining to Human Resources in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and Cal OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with Workers Compensation and Company safety program in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Support required training to managers/supervisors pertaining to safety and environmental program in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide a safe, clean, and healthy work environment for all employee’s and visitors.
  • Maintain environmentally sound practices and procedures throughout facility.
  • Responsible for all sire specific environmental compliance and reporting.
  • Communicate regularly with the executive management team and all key strategic partners in a timely fashion.
  • Complete such additional projects as may be directed by the Senior Vice President, Operations, or designees
  • Leadership and personal conduct are expected to align with the Vision and Mission for Mendocino Forest Products Company, LLC.
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred.
  • Ten to fifteen years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public
  • Knowledge of Database software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software
  • Must maintain a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines. 
  • Proficient skill level in Outlook, Power Point and MS Excel, Word, Project, Access, and Office

 Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to machinery in operation, fumes, dust, and loud environments.
  • This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather or rubber gloves, and hard hat.
