Overview

Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC), The industry leader in sustainable forest management, seeks a Geology Technician to join our Forestry team in Ukiah or Fort Bragg. 

 

The base salary for this position is $62,000.00 to $72,000.00.  Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience.  Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.

 

The Geology Technician's primary focus is to provide technical support on all geology related issues in the management of private timberlands, conduct geologic review for Timber Harvesting Plans (THP), watershed analysis and road / landslide mitigation.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The key areas of focus for this position are as follows;   

  • Provide necessary planning, groundwork, mapping and reporting required for geologic work related to preparation of timber harvest plans (THP);
  • Participate in aerial photographic analysis, review of published geologic maps and adjacent geology reports, field mapping of geologic formations, geomorphology and mass wasting;
  • Assist in the development of mitigations to reduce the potential for mass wasting from harvest activities;
  • Assist in writing geologic reports for agency review in THPs;
  • Document detailed characterizations of failed road segments for repair activities;
  • Assess mass wasting risks associated with adjacent public and private property;
  • Assist in preparing Watershed Wide Waste Discharge Reports and California Department of Fish and Wildlife 1600 permits;
  • Participate in watershed analysis reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year College or University in Geology or related field is required.
  • 1 - 2  years of related experience is preferred.
  • Geologist in Training preferred, or on track for same.
  • Must have experience in the recognition, mapping, measurement of, and interpretation of mass wasting
  •  geomorphology in a forested environment.
  • Proficient in using ArcView, GPS, MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook and similar software programs.

  • Ability to use GPS, directional compass, and topographical maps is necessary
  • Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and be eligible to operate company vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
  • Capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive-in various types of territory) all-terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.

 Travel Requirements:

  • Position has travel requirements of a local nature (within 150 miles one way) usually by pickup truck.

Physical Requirements:

  •  While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep and difficult terrain.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to machinery in operation, fumes, dust, and loud environments.
  • This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather or rubber gloves, and hard hat.
