Mendocino Forest Products is looking for an experienced HR Professional to join our team at our Humboldt Sawmill in Scotia, CA. As the HR Generalist you be part of an excellent HR team, that strives to provide outstanding customer service and professional support for a wide range of human resources activities.  We are looking for a HR Generalist who excels in problem solving and working with cross-functional teams at every level to achieve shared goals.  You will work closely with Managers to streamline HR functions, assist with staffing needs, enhance workforce retention, and manage risk.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for providing effective and outstanding customer service for our customer by using excellent, in-depth knowledge of company products, programs as well as effectively communicating with internal and extended external team members.

  • Work as a key member of the recruitment team and hiring process for the Scotia location.
  • Assist in managing daily activity in the Applicant Tracking System and conduct on-site interviews for open positions.
  • Schedule and manage interviews that take place throughout the property.
  • Assist with job fairs and other recruitment events in the local areas.
  • Build strong relationships with assigned Managers and Leaders in their departments to coach, mentor and collaborate with leadership.
  • Answer general HR questions including questions about HR policies, leaves of absences, payroll, and benefits.
  • Support Managers and Supervisors on employee relations issues.
  • In collaboration with the VP of HR, provide guidance to managers on routine issues.
  • Provide recommendations to help resolve work related conflicts.
  • Act as an investigator on employee investigations.
  • Manage the on-boarding process in the Scotia location including system tasks, benefits and required hiring documents to ensure a positive new hire experience.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the business; proactively meet and engage with all levels and departments of the business.
  • Assist with terminations, distribution of final paychecks and exit interviews.
  • Identify legal requirements related to all aspects of employment and ensure policies and procedures comply.
  • Support guidance and execution of the performance management process.
  • Support the training needs of the various departments and company
  • Maintain employee records remotely and ensure they are recorded in an electronic form or forwarded on to the Calpella HR office, including personnel records, training, and safety records.
  • Manage employee recognition programs and employee events, as assigned
  • Assist safety with workers’ compensation claims
  • Provide both strategic and tactical day-to-day guidance to managers, supervisors, and employees (coaching, counseling, career development and disciplinary actions).
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time.
  • Position is located on site in Scotia, CA and will be actively working in all locations of the facility.
  • Occasional travel to Ukiah HR office will be required.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field & 5+ years of progressive experience in dedicated HR roles.
  • PHR/SPHR a plus.
  • Experience with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
  • HRIS systems (ADP a plus!).
  • Solid knowledge of federal and state employment law.
  • Prior experience working with exempt and non-exempt employees.
  • Ability to serve a diverse range of employees with equity, fairness, and tact.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Reputation for integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Outgoing and approachable.
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to use hands to move fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
  • The employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time
  • This position requires the employee to view a computer screen and use a keyboard for extended period of time
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel crouch or crawl
  • Position travels outside the local area, by car or plane, up to 25% of the time
