Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) is looking for an experienced Maintenance Planner to join our Sawmill and Power Plant maintenance team in Scotia, CA.


The primary focus will be to prioritize work requests, specifying parts and completing proper job plans for the maintenance department across all departments, using a work order-based system.

Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) located in Scotia, CA was formed in July 2008 through the reorganization of the former Pacific Lumber Company and related entities. Humboldt Redwood consists of forestry as well as lumber manufacturing and distribution operations. Preventative Maintenance

  • Develop and implement new mechanical, electrical and precision levelling based preventative maintenance processes throughout the facility.
  • Primary focus on lumber operations and the power plant and secondarily on site and building infrastructure
  • In coordination with the maintenance supervisor, evaluate PMs for effectiveness, ensuring instructions are clear and concise, measurement based as much as possible and focused on identifying defects and failures; update as required
  • Help to determine root cause of failures and help identify and implement permanent corrective actions, with may include creating new PMs, working with team to design improvements, identifying critical spare parts, benchmarking other plants, etc.
  • Use data (uptime/downtime or running data, time based) to predict maintenance needs and planned down time
  • Coordinate planned downtimesto reduce mean time between failures and minimize interference with production schedules


  • Work in conjunction with Purchasing to ensure materials availability and kitting of planned work
  • Communicate directly with Purchasing regarding parts required and inventory levels needed to complete a job or for stock levels
  • Organize and label spare parts inventories to specific jobs, prepare for emergency or for preventative maintenance needs
  • Research parts and create requisitions using cost effective, quality parts in compliance with all sourcing policies and procedures
  • Determine when failed parts can be rebuilt or repaired in lieu of replacing

 Work Order System / Backlog Management

  • Spend sufficient time out in the plant scoping work (approximately 30%)
  • Create work orders based on observations and interactions with staff and crew
  • Review and prioritize new work orders to maintain a reasonable backlog to ensure a balance of safety related, up-time and down-time work is always ready to schedule and assign
  • Keep up with turning notifications into work orders in a timely manner to ensure available down time is fully utilized – does not allow aged work orders to accumulate
  • Understand the job well enough to describe what needs to be accomplished, estimate labor hours, tools and resources needed to complete different work orders

 Other duties

  • Oversee contractors and support supervisor and maintenance technicians during down time
  • Utilize and update plant blueprints, drawings, instructional manuals and special procedures
  • Update and correct equipment files, specifications, parts lists (BOM), descriptions, etc. as errors or outdated information are encountered


  • Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.), in a technical field with a minimum of two years maintenance supervision experience
  • or 7+ years of progressive sawmill maintenance experience including leadership of other maintenance personnel. 
  • Experienced with pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical controls, as well as machine and machine control design are required. 
  • Familiarity with OSHA codes.
  • Advanced skill levels with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Database software/Access (macros, pivot tables, user forms, data analysis pack).
  • Intermediate to advanced skill level with CAD, Solid Works and/or Visio software required.
  • Experience in query and macro generation, computer simulation, Facility Layout, Process Flow Mapping, digital image, and video editing is a plus.
  • Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Predictive and Preventive Maintenance (PPM) procedures a plus.

  • The employee will split his/her time between a typical manufacturing office environment and the manufacturing floor.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate while the noise level in the sawmill dictates the necessity for hearing protection when working on the manufacturing floor.
  • This position may require the following equipment when in the plant: eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, safety shoes, hard hat and fall protection as required.
