    Humboldt Sawmill Company, LLC (HSC) is looking for talented and experienced Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Specialist to join our EHSteam.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Manages programs and policies to ensure timely regulatory compliance, business alignment, and EHS objectives are met while maintaining cost effectiveness. Develop and implement strategies and action plans to effectively meet current environmental regulatory requirements and company policies.


    • Provide regulatory and technical EHS support to Company management
    • Maintain knowledge of all environmental areas impacting operations including air emissions, waste and storm water, solid and hazardous waste management, pollution prevention, emergency planning and response, ground water protection, hazardous chemical use as it relates to environmental management
    • Assist in developing and implementing programs for environmental monitoring, sampling activities and reporting for air, water and waste, including collecting, analyzing and interpreting data
    • Compile and submit air and water monitoring, hazardous waste and other environmental reports
    • Conduct air and water permit renewal and modification activities as required, to include Title V, general industrial and NPDES.
    • Perform inspections of site operation to evaluate compliance with environmental policies, programs, procedures, systems, and regulations and make all improvements or corrections as necessary
    • Proactively monitor and ensure operational awareness and ability to comply with future regulations or industry trends
    • Identify, analyze, manage and implement practical, cost-effective solutions to environmental and regulatory issues
    • Develop and oversee remediation programs to maintain compliance in a cost effective and efficient manner
    • Directly contribute to environmental budgeting (expense and capital projects) processes
    • Review and manage capital projects for environmental implications and compliance
    • Company Liaison with outside regulatory agencies as first point of contact during permit renewal processes
    • Works with management to further influence company culture achieving environmental excellence
    • Proactively monitor and evaluate Company Environmental Management Systems to identify and mitigate potential environmental impacts; non-compliance; adverse public perception
    • Lead initiatives as appropriate to implement environmental programs to achieve compliance and continuous improvement
    • Communicate clearly and concisely (written and verbal) with operations, management, and outside stakeholders


    • Bachelor of Science degree required preferably in Environmental Science or related field.
    • A minimum of two years of work experience in a position responsible for leading environmental programs in a manufacturing setting
    • Knowledge and experience in the following areas is preferred: OSHA 40 hour; 40-hour Hazwoper; hazardous waste management (multi-state); California Air Resource Board regulations; Clean Air Act; Clean Water Act; Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA); DOT; storm water management; permitting; and interaction with agencies.
    • Experience working in an industrial setting and/or forest/lumber products business to include biomass energy.
    • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of EPA and State environmental regulations (including CA, OR, CO, WA, HI)
    • Ability to work independently and interact with representatives of regulatory agencies in a professional manor
    • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook and be able to input and submit regulatory compliance and monitoring data in government electronic reporting formats

    • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 
    • This position may perform tasks of a repetitive nature.
    • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. 
    • The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. 
    • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
    • This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, hard hat, leather or rubber gloves, sleeve protection, leather aprons and face shields.
